M. Bernadette Officer, CEO and President of the Officer Funeral Homes, is a funeral director and embalmer licensed in Illinois and Missouri. She oversees the day-to-day operations of the corporations.
Bernadette in a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, TN with a B.A. in Psychology. She also earned a M.A. in Education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a degree in Mortuary Science from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Wheeling, Illinois.
Bernadette holds membership in the St. Clair County Funeral Directors Association, the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, the International Order of the Golden Rule (past board member), and the International Cemetery and Funeral Association. Her civic and social involvement includes: Diamond Life membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Life membership in the NAACP, The Links, Inc., the Smart Set and the Sunday Jams. As a devoted member of the St. Luke A.M.E Church, her spiritual goal is to deepen her relationship with God. Professionally, she is dedicated to continuing to provide excellence in funeral service along with her brother, Carl.
Carl E. Officer is Vice President of the Officer Funeral Homes. He was the first African American cadet to graduate from the Mormion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois. He earned a B.S. in Political Science at the former Western College, now Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Carl is also a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. He received a degree in Mortuary Science from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and is a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Illinois and Missouri.
In 1979, Carl became the youngest mayor in the country when he won the office in his hometown of East St. Louis, Illinois. He served as mayor until 1991. After a twelve year hiatus, Carl was re-elected as mayor and returned to office in May 2003. Mr. Officer was ordained as an elder in the A.M.E. Church in 2001.
He holds membership in the Illinois Funeral Directors Association, St. Clair County Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, International Order of the Golden Rule, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and is a 33rd degree Mason. Carl received a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Illinois National Guard. He is the father of one daughter. Carl is a proud "Keeper of the Family Tradition," and along with his sister, forms a dedicated team representing the third generation in funeral service.
