Our Legacy

OFFICER FUNERAL HOME, P.C.,   is family-owned and operated.  We are licensed to operate in Illinois and Missouri as well as providing service throughout the United States and globally.  We proudly celebrate  96 years of service to the community, spanning three generations of licensed funeral directors and embalmers.

Through the years, the women and men of our family have shared equally in the responsibilities of operating a successful, community-centered business,  and in preparing the next generation with the commitment to continue the family tradition.

Officer Funeral Home was founded in 1918 by visionaries, Annette Harris Officer and William E. Officer, Jr.  Their son, Marion  E. Officer, Sr. and his wife, Myrtle B. Gilliam Officer, succeded them as President and Vice-President of the firm in 1954.  Their children, M. Bernadette Officer , Carl E. Officer, and Marion E. Officer, Jr.,  were active members and officers in the corporations.  Myrtle B. Officer became CEO of the corporations in 1989 after the death of her husband, Marion E. Officer, Sr.

Officer Funeral Home, P.C. - Metro East Chapel, located in East St. Louis, Illinois, was one of the first establishments in Southern Illinois, designed and built as a funeral home in 1929.  This facility was remodeled  through the years to keep pace with our commitment to excellence.  Fire severely damaged the building in December of 1986.  God was merciful and there were no casualties.  The funeral home was rebuilt on the original site in 1988.

William and Annette's son, Marion Edward Officer, Sr. and his wife, Mrytle B. Gilliam Officer , succeeded his parents as President and Vice-President of the firm in 1954.

A dynamic business duo, they elevated funeral service to a higher standard. Their children, M. Bernadette Officer, Carl E. Officer and Marion E. Officer, Jr, became active members of the firm and officers in the corporations.  Myrtle B. Officer became CEO of the corporations in 1989 after the death of her husband. Mrs. Myrtle B. Officer continued the family tradition over the next fifteen years,  introducing to her clientele, industry innovations such as memorial video tributes in 1989 and the launching of our web-site with online memorials in 1999.  She was the first in her geographic region to offer custom casket interiors and custom register books.  Mrs. O., as she was affectionatly called, entered into eternal rest, April 23, 2004.  Mrs. Officer's daughter, M. Bernadette Officer, became CEO and President and her son, Carl E. Officer was named Vice-President in 2004.  Representing the third generation, this sister and brother team are devoted to honoring the work of their grandparents and parents by keeping the family tradition of providing the very best in funeral service. Through the years, they have supported the community by; opening our doors as a meeting place for numerous organizations; providing sponsorship of athletic, educational, civic, and religious programs; and providing a place of worship for area churches when their buildings were destroyed by fire or were otherwise displaced.

In 2006, Marion E. Officer, Jr. left the family firm with our blessing.

We sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence we have earned in our community and pledge to continue to provide the best in funeral  and community service.
